James Alley is an artist currently focussed on murals, canvas works and workshop facilitation.
After graduating from The Queensland College of Art with a Bachelor of Design in 2000 James worked as an Art Director for Billabong for 6 years while painting and exhibiting locally in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast before moving to London.
Following working and exhibiting artwork in London for a year James returned to Australia to work on more community focussed artists projects. In 2008 he began working for the social enterprise Speakout (now Human Ventures).
In 2010 James started an art studio working with non profit, community and small organisations while continuing to create artwork and exhibit.
James is currently working on large scale murals, painting canvases and providing workshop facilitation. He frequently works with marginalised young people and has developed programs used in Brisbane youth detention centre, and for refugee children in Brisbane. He is also a regular sessional tutor at Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art.
Artist Statement
I mostly paint figurative works.
I’m interested in exploring all kinds of themes but often get my inspiration from looking at culture and society.
